Making Connections

Our new uni project is called making connections. We have to create a collection of designs for a company which we see our own style and way of thinking reflected in their own work! I have chosen the interior design company Miss Print, as I love their bold Scandinavian style and use of colour.

For my initial research I looked into both the fashion, interior and paper market areas, and then reduced that research to 3 inspiring designers and companies before finally choosing my company.

I have recently just completed my mood boards which will set the scene for the whole project. I have done them on theme, customer and market.

Next if the fun bit..Design design design!

Tiger Print - Top 100

Woo! I have just found out that I have been chosen as one the top 100 design entries for the Tiger Print Black & White competition and I am so chuffed!! I feel like the surface pattern design course has given me such a confidence boost just to enter my designs in the first place but to come in the top 100 I am just blown away! I think i'm going to be keeping my fingers and toes crossed until the September 9th when winners and runners up are announced!

Here is the design that was chosen out of the 3 that I entered.

Photoshop Flowers

Last week I posted some of my sketches from the surface pattern course, and this week I have turned them into patterns! I am loving the course so far, it is quite fast paced but it feels good to be doing something creative and I am learning something new every day.

I also have a confession to make.......I now like drawing FLOWERS and cannot stop!!!

Seeing Shapes

This week I started the 'art and business of surface pattern design' course featuring Rachael Taylor! And so far it has not disappointed!
I've met some lovely people and can't wait to see what I will have achieved in 5 weeks time! Here was our first task to look at object and see the shapes within them. I chose to draw wild flowers as I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone (I really don't like drawing flowers!) I also tried to experiment with different media which I don't normally use such as felt tip pens.
Tomorrow we are learning Photoshop! I will keep you posted how it goes!

If you fancy taking a look at the course here's the link http://dowhatyouloveforlife.com/pattern/

Zandra Rhodes Exhibition

Yesterday me and my family took a trip up to London for the day, and me and my mum went to see the Zandra Rhodes exhibition currently in The Fashion and Textile Museum...and oh my gosh! It was amazing. I literally did not want to leave I was completely inspired by her enthusiasm for what she does. She has never lost her style and identity which I think is so encouraging because I know that you can get lost along the way and try to do things that are more commercial and pleasing to everybody, but she is so successful because she is unique and different. One thing I really took from the experience was that I need to draw everyday as that is where Zandra Rhodes gets all of her designs from originally....lets see how that one goes!!

This was my favourite design from the sketchbook collection. Although Zandra Rhodes is known for her traditional technique to printing, this collection was produced through digital printing straight from one of her sketches.

Me and my mum also visited Greenwich Market which was filled with artists and crafters (not sure if that's a word!) selling their beautiful items.

The view from Greenwich Park looking back at the city.

This was where we had our breakfast, I just loved the building!

The exhibition is on in the Fashion and Textile Museum until the 31st August, I would say that if you get the chance you just have to go honestly you will not be disappointed it was one of the best exhibitions I've ever been too!
Let me know if you've already been and if you loved it as much as I did!

Inspiring Artist : Ana Kolega

While I was in Croatia I saw a lot of different artists showcasing their work within the streets of Old Town Zadar which was very inspiring in itself. However there was one artist which managed to stop me every time I walked past (which was every night!)

....................................
Ana Kolega is a local artist who lives and works in Zadar, and has participated in many exhibitions at home and also abroad.

Her art is so colourful and energetic that you can't help but stop and admire it! I love the childlike innocence to the paintings and also the different media that she works on.

I ended up buying 2 of his postcards as I couldn't afford the actual prints, but next time I visit I am definitely buying all of them!

If you would like to see more of Ana Kolega's work visit her website here:

Croatia

Here are just a few snaps from my recent family vacation to Croatia.

The island of Pag is known for it's lace (and cheese!) Here you can see old women sat outside their houses crocheting lace to sell in gorgeous colours and patterns.

The well recognised red roofs of Croatia

The Sea Organ - An art installation using the waves to make music
&
The colourful tourists!

One of the many artists selling paintings in the streets of Zadar's old town.

The beautiful old buildings in Split

Krka National Park waterfalls (I had a lot of fun here with my camera trying to work out speed settings!)

Sew Gorgeous

I have been meaning to do a post on two dresses I have recently made, but I haven't felt like it until now as it just didn't feel right showcasing these summer dresses when the sun was know where to be seen! But finally the sun has appeared and it is feeling much more summery and happy here!

Both dresses were made using the same pattern which was a New Look pattern number 6143 and dress C. They didn't take too long to make as after I had figured out the first one the second one took less than a day to do! I love both patterns on the dresses and also the style which is very 50's . My favourite!

I'm going away on holiday tomorrow to Croatia so will be doing a post on that as soon as I get back! So keep an eye out.
